Why is New Year's Eve harder on a network than other party nights?
The City of Sydney estimated that nearly a million people gathered for the 2025 to 2026 celebrations, with fireworks at 9pm and at midnight. The official Sydney New Year's Eve site lists 48 vantage points around the harbour, and many private functions run in rooftop bars, terraces, offices and restaurants close to them.
Three things happen at once on the night:
- Everyone films at the same moment. Guests record and share the fireworks within the same few minutes, so upload demand jumps far above a normal party.
- Mobile networks near the foreshore are shared with the crowd outside. A party that relies on phones or a single mobile router competes with hundreds of thousands of people nearby.
- Payments peak just before and after midnight. Bar queues build up around both fireworks shows.
The safe planning assumption is that mobile data around the harbour will be slow or intermittent at the busiest times, and the venue network has to cope without it.
Which internet connection should a harbourside party use?
| Connection | Role on the night | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Venue fixed line or NBN service | Primary connection | Upload speed, who else shares it, and whether you can use a dedicated port |
| Temporary dedicated internet | Primary where the venue has no usable line | Lead time for installation, which can take weeks |
| 4G or 5G router | Backup only | Expect congestion near the foreshore; test on a busy evening, not a quiet afternoon |
A fixed line is not affected by the crowd outside, which is why it should carry payments, scanning and any live stream. Our guide on how long internet takes to connect explains lead times, and temporary internet covers venues with no suitable service. A mobile router is still worth having as backup internet, but plan as if it may run slowly at the peaks.
How do you keep the bar and the door working at midnight?
- Give payments their own network. Keep EFTPOS terminals off the guest WiFi, with a separate network name and password, and cable fixed terminals where you can.
- Check the offline option with your payment provider. Many terminals have an offline or store-and-forward mode with limits. Know how it works and who can switch it on before the night.
- Download the guest list for the door. If tickets are scanned, load the list onto scanners in advance so entry can continue during an outage. Our ticket scanning guide covers the setup.
- Limit guest bandwidth. Per-device limits stop a few large uploads from slowing the bar.
- Lock down the network. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends changing default passwords and using strong encryption on WiFi and routers.
See EFTPOS and payment networks for how we separate payment traffic at events.
Can you stream the fireworks to family and offices overseas?
Yes, if the upload is planned. Each live stream needs a steady 10 to 20 Mbps upload, with 1.5 to 2 times headroom, on a connection that is not shared with guest traffic. Use a cable to the streaming laptop or encoder rather than WiFi.
NSW daylight saving runs until 4 April 2027, so midnight on 31 December 2026 in Sydney is 13:00 UTC. For guests sharing the moment with people overseas:
| City | Local time at Sydney midnight |
|---|---|
| Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore | 9pm, 31 December |
| New Delhi | 6:30pm, 31 December |
| London | 1pm, 31 December |
| New York | 8am, 31 December |
| Los Angeles | 5am, 31 December |
Run a full test stream on an evening in the days before. If the stream matters, keep a recorded copy so it can be uploaded after midnight when demand eases. Live streaming internet explains how we set up dedicated upload.
When should the network be installed?
Access near the harbour closes early. For the 2025 to 2026 celebrations, North Sydney Council's traffic information listed road closures starting from 7pm on 30 December in parts of Milsons Point, Kirribilli and McMahons Point, with more closures through the day on 31 December. Vehicles parked inside closed areas could not leave until roads reopened, and police could restrict access further.
- Install and test by 30 December, or earlier, for venues inside closure zones. Check your council's NYE traffic information for 2026 when it is released.
- Test at the same time of evening as the party, so you see realistic mobile and venue load.
- Plan for staff on site past 1am. Payments, transport bookings and guest uploads continue well after the midnight fireworks.
- Book early. Late December is the busiest time of year for event equipment; see when to book event WiFi.
How many access points does a New Year's Eve party need?
Plan capacity on the device count, not the floor area. Assume about one device per guest, 1.5 to 2 devices per working staff member, and about 50 devices per access point.
| Party size | Approximate devices | Guest access points | Separate network |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 guests, 10 staff | About 100 | 2 | Payments on their own network |
| 250 guests, 25 staff | About 300 | 6 | Payments, door and production |
| 500 guests, 40 staff | About 580 | 11 to 12 | Payments, door, production and staff |
Open terraces cover roughly 900 m² per access point, but a crowded rooftop needs the extra units for capacity. Glass balustrades, kitchens and stairwells also block signal. A private function checklist is on our private event WiFi page. To get a layout for your venue, send the floor plan, guest numbers and timings and we will suggest a setup.
Questions people ask
Will mobile data work at a New Year's Eve party near Sydney Harbour?
It may work, but it is likely to be slow or intermittent around the 9pm and midnight fireworks because mobile networks near the foreshore are shared with a very large crowd. Use a fixed line for payments and streams and treat mobile as backup.
How much upload is needed to stream the midnight fireworks?
Plan a steady 10 to 20 Mbps upload for each stream, plus 1.5 to 2 times headroom, on a connection not shared with guest WiFi.
What time is Sydney midnight on New Year's Eve in other countries?
Sydney is on daylight saving time, UTC+11, so midnight on 31 December 2026 is 13:00 UTC: 9pm in Beijing and Singapore, 1pm in London and 8am in New York on 31 December.
When should WiFi be installed for a harbourside NYE party?
By 30 December or earlier for venues inside road closure zones. In 2025 some North Sydney closures began at 7pm on 30 December.
Should bar EFTPOS use the guest WiFi?
No. Put payment terminals on a separate network, cable fixed terminals where possible, and confirm the offline mode with your payment provider.
